Seed-Grown: This plant was grown from seed in our Arch Rock Aloes nursery.
Rare: This plant is very hard to find anywhere else. We specialize in rare plants, and are the only growers of some species.
A graceful and distinctive agave species native to Mexico, Agave ellemeetiana is admired for its broad, soft foliage and elegant toothless leaf margins — a rarity among agaves. Forming a lush symmetrical rosette that can reach up to 6 feet across with age, this species brings a softer, more sculptural presence to gardens and container collections alike.
Unlike heavily armed agaves, Agave ellemeetiana has smooth-edged leaves and a refined texture that make it especially appealing in pathways, courtyards, and collector landscapes where form and foliage take center stage. Mature plants typically flower after around five years, producing an impressive bloom spike before offsetting.
Growth Habit: Large solitary rosette reaching up to approximately 6 feet across
Foliage: Soft leaves with smooth, toothless margins
Blooming: Typically flowers after approximately 5 years
Care: Best grown in bright light with afternoon shade in hotter climates. Tolerant of some frost once established with excellent drainage.
We continue to grow Agave ellemeetiana for its unusual softness, clean architectural form, and versatility in both collector gardens and designed landscapes. It remains one of the most approachable and elegant agave species for a wide range of growing styles.
